Floods that rocked the Front Range in 2013 are turning out to be a boon for communities elsewhere in the state. That includes Mesa County, which is very close to getting millions of dollars from the federal government to do its own flood prevention work. The county has applied in the past, but hasn't been funded because it had to compete nationally with projects like those that followed Hurricanes Katrina and Sandy.
Now, because of Colorado's severe flooding in 2013, Mesa County doesn't have to compete against those other projects anymore, because of a little-discussed program at the Federal Emergency Management Agency. Montezuma, Huerfano, and Chaffee Counties are among those also benefitting. Mike Hillenburg of FEMA's Mitigation Division spoke with Colorado Matters host Ryan Warner.
