A headline about Syrian refugees fleeing to Europe caught Alexandra Ruiz's attention last fall. Ruiz, who lives in Fort Collins, says the article stayed with her long after she read it, prompting her decision to travel the entire refugee route: from a camp outside Beirut to resettlement in Germany. Fellow filmmaker Kyle Rasmussen joined her on the trip.
Their travels became the subject of Ruiz's documentary "ALWADI: A Journey of Hope." Excerpts from the film, which is still a work in progress, screen next week during Colorado State University's inaugural ACT Human Rights Film Festival. The festival runs from Friday to April 22 at various Fort Collins venues.
Ruiz and Rasmussen spoke with Colorado Matters host Nathan Heffel.
