Just because kids are in P.E., doesn’t mean they are active. Nationally, students in gym class are really only getting a good workout for about 4 minutes of each half hour. Denver Public Schools wants kids to be more active than that. The district got a federal grant to roll out what it thinks is a better P.E. curriculum in its elementary schools. Eric Larson is in charge of P.E. district-wide. He tells Ryan Warner that at the elementary schools where this is in place, kids come into gym class and immediately are told to move.
SPARK, the name of the new curriculum, stands for Select fruits and vegetables, Play actively, Avoid excess sugar and fat, Reduce TV/media time, Keep H20 the way to go.
