The Rocky Mountain Institute wants to make commercial buildings across the U.S. 50 percent more efficient by 2050.

Climatologists say 2016 is on track to be the hottest year in Colorado history and with temperatures in the state expected to climb four degrees by 2050, some say overheated, energy-sapping buildings will become the new normal.

But the Rocky Mountain Institute disagrees. An independent, non-profit organization focusing on energy use, has set a goal of making commercial buildings in the United States 50 percent more energy efficient by the mid-century.Photo: Victor Olgyay

Victor Olgyay, a principal architect with the Institute, said making buildings more efficient will not only help the environment, but also a company's bottom line by making them more valuable properties.

Olgyay spoke with Colorado Matters host Andrea Dukakis.
