We remember a Colorado music pioneer who transported audiences to another time and place. Max Morath was a pianist, composer, TV personality and author with a deep love of American popular music, especially ragtime. Born in 1926 in Colorado Springs, Morath graduated from Colorado College. He began in radio, then moved to TV, hosting popular shows on Denver’s KRMA, a precursor to RMPBS.

Max "Mr. Ragtime" Morath is credited with the genre's revival in the 1970s. He toured for decades,  logging more than 5,000 performances, from the Gold Bar Room in Cripple Creek, to the off-Broadway stages of New York City. He was inducted in the Colorado Music Hall of Fame in 2016. He passed away earlier this summer at age 96.
