Hugh Evans washes his socks while deployed in Italy in 1945. Evans fought in the 10th Mountain Division in WWII. This month, members of his family will retrace his steps in Italy during a memorial trip for 10th Mountain descendants.

A barrage of soldiers on skis stormed an Italian ridge 80 years ago, helping win World War II. The 10th Mountain Division is storied here in Colorado and in Italy. This month, 10th Mountain descendants will travel to the Italian countryside to retrace their fathers’ and grandfathers’ footsteps. This commemorates the taking of Riva Ridge. Susannah Evans LaVon, who lives in Grand Junction, and her daughter Katy, will make the journey in memory of the late Hugh Evans. CPR’s Western Slope reporter Stina Sieg will join them; they spoke before their departure.
