The Southern Ute Indian Tribe has built a herd of more than 100 bison.

Coloradans across the state are working to restore the bison that once crowded the plains of the American West to the Native American tribes who treasure their spiritual and cultural significance.

Those efforts are chronicled in the new Rocky Mountain PBS documentary, “Return of the Buffalo,’’ which airs Thursday, October 19 and again on Sunday, October 22.

Colorado Matters host Ryan Warner spoke with managing producer Amanda Horvath and with Danielle SeeWalker, a member of the Lakota Nation and of the Denver American Indian Commission, who is featured in the film.
