Skiers aren’t the only ones who care how deep the snow is. Ranchers and road & water engineers need to know how much has fallen. But traditional ways of measuring snow depth don’t always work well. So Ethan Gutmann, of the National Center for Atmospheric Research in Boulder, is looking for ways to get more accurate measurements. He’s among the scientists using lasers and GPS in new ways to gauge snow depth.
