The sadness and loneliness so often heard in bluegrass are what first attracted Jonny Miller to the genre. He says something about that sad sound made him happy during a difficult time. It also eventually led him to pick up a mandolin and start a bluegrass band called The Lonesome Days.

The Denver quartet, which has been runner-up in the Telluride Bluegrass Festival band competition twice, releases its self-titled debut album next week. The songs touch on themes like heartache and loneliness. The Lonesome Days' album release show is Aug. 25 at Stem Ciders in Denver.
