This Is Norma O. Walker. First And Only Female Mayor Of Aurora

November 28, 2016

Politicians might expect criticism about their stances on issues. But what about criticism on the length of their skirt or their earrings? These are comments Norma O. Walker said she got often when she served as the mayor of Aurora.

Fifty-one years ago this month, voters elected Walker, making her the first female mayor of a United States city with more than 60,000 people. She says it was all a fluke.

Walker served one term, from 1965 - 1967, and then moved out of politics. She is now 88 and lives in Portland, Oregon with her daughter. Aurora has not had a female mayor since.

She spoke with Colorado Matters host Ryan Warner.
