When Donald J. Trump is sworn in Friday as the 45th president of the United States, longtime supporter Clarice Navarro of Pueblo will be there to celebrate. Navarro, a Republican state representative, served on Trump's Hispanic Advisory Council last summer, and spoke personally to the then-candidate about the importance of issues such as health care and immigration. Trump won Pueblo County by a few hundred votes in November, becoming the first Republican to take the longtime Democratic stronghold since 1972, when Richard Nixon defeated George McGovern.
Emily Bobrick of Denver is headed to Washington, too, but with a different goal in mind. Bobrick, a Democrat, will participate in Saturday's Women's March on Washington to protest Trump's announced policies. She says she hopes the experience will bring solidarity and the beginning of a new feminist movement. Bobrick's first foray into electoral politics began this spring, when she supported Sen. Bernie Sanders in the primary against Hillary Clinton.
