When wolves and wolf-dogs in captivity outgrow their domestic trappings, they’re usually too wild for animal shelters and too tame for wildlife organizations. But there is a place that’ll meet them in the genetically muddled middle -- a sanctuary called Mission: Wolf. The organization and its canine residents reside about an hour outside Westcliffe in the heart of southern Colorado.
CPR video fellow Rachel Ramberg visited Mission: Wolf. She shares with Colorado Matters what she saw at the sanctuary, including volunteers chopping up huge animal carcasses to feed the wolves, a greenhouse garden shaped like a paw print and, of course, wolves and wolf-dogs up close.
