At the Cotton Club in Colorado Springs, a sign in the window read, “Everybody Welcome.†And Fannie Mae Duncan, who opened the club in 1948, stood by that motto, regardless of a customer's skin color. In 1958, a local photographer documented a day in Duncan's life. The photographs are now on display at the Colorado Springs Pioneers Museum. Ryan Warner talks to museum director Matt Mayberry.
