The Centers for Disease Control is reporting nearly 4,000 cases of West Nile virus in the U.S. as of October 2nd, including more than 160 deaths. In Colorado, a total of 106 cases have been reported this year. KRCC’S Elizabeth Schoder has more.
The number of West Nile cases confirmed this year is the highest number reported to the CDC through the first week of October since 2003. In the 106 cases reported in Colorado, most have been on the Western Slope, including three deaths. In Southern Colorado, El Paso County has seen two cases, while Freemont has seen five. Other counties report one each.
Symptoms of the virus include fever, headache, and neck stiffness. Cases this year started to emerge in early July and peaked in late August.
