Before Valentina Lisitsa became an online sensation with more than 56 million video views on her YouTube channel, the Ukrainian pianist's career seemed to be in trouble. She remortgaged her house in order to finance a recording session at Abbey Road Studios with the London Symphony Orchestra (LSO), and it looks like the gamble paid off. Lisitsa’s new recording of the Rachmaninov Concertos is being considered by many to be the finest in 40 years.
"Rather than a recording opportunity being given to her, Valentina Lisista put it all on the line by hiring the LSO with her own money," says Classical Great at 8 host Karla Walker. "And you can hear in the recording that every note counts. There are no throw away notes or phrases and because of that you will hear things in these familiar concertos that you've never heard before."
