This Saturday marks the first statewide Wildfire Preparedness Day of Service. As KRCC’s Eliza Densmore reports, one of the more regional projects involves fuel mitigation in Black Forest.
Volunteers are expected to remove small pine saplings along Shoup Road using hand tools and small chainsaws. Owner of the Black Forest News Judy von Ahlefeldt is organizing the event.
"It needs to be the private forested landowner that takes the action, especially along the roads, where we have way too much fuel up close to the roads, and it would be a serious problem if there were a fire for both access for firefighters that’s safe and the evacuation routes for people to get out."
The Black Forest Fire Department is also expected to have an open house all day. They’re among the many towns and cities across the state scheduled to participate in the Wildfire Preparedness Day. Other projects include filling sandbags at the Ute Pass Elementary School in Chipita Park.
