Democratic State Senator Pat Steadman speaks at a rally for marriage equality at the state Capitol Monday March 3.

A lunch-hour rally at the state Capitol Monday kicked off a public education effort to win support for overturning Colorado’s constitutional ban on gay marriage.  Organizer Dave Montez with the group One Colorado said the outreach could happen one-on-one, or in town hall-like settings.

“It can happen in that formalized way, where you pull a bunch of people together and you have a conversation with them about why marriage is important,” Montez says. "Or it can happen in everyday life, where you talk to your neighbors, where you talk to your friends about why marriage is important to you."

About a hundred people cheered and held signs. They were joined by church leaders and members of the State Legislature.

Besides getting the public on their side, supporters are also hoping to prevail in the courts.  Gay-marriage bans are now facing legal challenges in Colorado and at least four other states.
