The deaths of three llamas that were attacked by a rare pack of juvenile mountain lions have state wildlife officials warning residents in western Colorado to take precautions.
The Daily Sentinel reports all but one of Mesa County resident Fred Bolton's llamas were killed by mountain lions between Friday and Sunday. Wildlife officials left a trail camera on a carcass in case the mountain lions return.
Colorado Parks and Wildlife southwest region spokesman Joe Lewandowski says residents should keep animals in cages or other secure enclosures, especially from dawn to dusk when this year's healthy population of predators is most active.
Lewandowski says this is an unusual juvenile pack and that Bolton's is the first report of mountain lions killing livestock in the southwest region so far this year.
