Coloradan Places First Among American Women At NYC Marathon

The New York City marathon was the first time Colorado runner Laura Thweatt ran more than 22 miles. But that didn't stop the 26-year-old from being the first American woman to cross the finish line.

Thweatt finished seventh overall with a time of 2:28:23, only four minutes behind winner Mary Keitany of Kenya. Thweatt now plans to rest for the remainder of the year before trying to make the U.S. Olympic Team. 

CPR News spoke to Laura Thweatt after her first marathon.

On never having run a marathon: 

"My coach and I took what a lot of people would consider a risk in running a full marathon, especially having never run one before. And a course like New York, it's a challenging course. It's definitely not the easiest marathon out there...That's officially the farthest I have ever run in my life. I think my longest long run was 21, 22 miles."

On her expectations during the race: 

"I figured I was going to be in the top ten and first American, but you don't really know for sure until you cross the line where you are. And you don't know who's chasing you down. And I was really starting to hurt those last six miles. I wasn't quite sure until I finished exactly what would happened."

On what she plans to do next: 

"I am going to keep the rest of the year pretty quiet just to make sure I recover fully from the marathon...It's the Olympic year so everybody's gearing up to give their all and try to make the team. So it'll be a big year next year...I definitely want to be running for a spot at the track trials in July."
