Fort Collins is dropping a proposal that would have permitted people to camp in city parks and other public property.
The Coloradoan reports city councilors had been scheduled to discuss the idea Tuesday but it has been pulled from the agenda. Council staffers are instead recommending that the city focus on existing programs to help the homeless.
Camping is illegal in the city. Under the proposal, people found sleeping outside could still be ticketed but the ticket could be dismissed if homeless shelters were full at the time.
The initial recommendation to relax the camping ban followed a community meeting earlier this month. Homeless advocates have been lobbying City Council to allow people to rest and sleep in public.
