Colorado-Built Spacecraft To Collect Asteroid Sample

A Colorado-built spacecraft is now at its launch site in Florida.

The Osiris-REx project will launch in September, aiming to take a sample from the surface of an asteroid and bring it back to Earth.

An Air Force cargo plane took the spacecraft from Buckley Air Force Base in Aurora to the Kennedy Space Center last week. Its destination is an asteroid that sometimes comes within a few hundred thousand miles from Earth.

Osiris is expected to reach the asteroid in 2018, and return to Earth five years later.
