It seems Ernest Greene, the songwriter and producer behind Washed Out, decided to have a bit of fun at his own expense on his latest album cover. The artwork for "Mister Mellow" features an image of Big Bird with a cap that reads "Chillwave," the electronic sub-genre Greene is credited with popularizing -- and a term that he previously disowned.
He's having fun with his music, too: The single "Get Lost" is an upbeat dance floor jam. It finds Greene continuing to move away from the "mellow" vibes that characterized his early music. His spaced-out vocals remain, but the song's rhythm and horn samples recall house and disco music.
Washed Out performs Aug. 22 at the Ogden Theatre.
