Alamosa Locomotive Turns 100

Listen Now

Every day, during its summer season, Number 18 hauls passenger cars-- filled with tourists-- up and over La Veta Pass, from Alamosa to La Veta, then back again. The locomotive is turning 100 years old and the Rio Grande Scenic Railroad, which owns and operates it, is throwing the old girl a birthday bash this weekend. Steve Butler is the mechanic in charge of keeping her in tip top shape, and he tells us how Number 18 got her start and what she's been up to these past 100 years.
