Roaring Fork School District officials say they're having trouble recruiting and keeping teachers because of the high cost of housing.

The Glenwood Springs Post Independent reported Tuesday that some school district employees have trouble finding housing at any cost.

The district includes Glenwood Springs, Carbondale and Basalt. First-year teachers are paid about $35,000 annually.

Former Roaring Fork District teacher Matt Hauptly says it can cost $500,000 or more to buy a house in the district. Hauptly now works at a school in Broomfield.

Roaring Fork High School Principal Drew Adams says some teachers opt for long commutes from other towns with more affordable housing.

The district and the town of Carbondale are considering an affordable housing development with 100 units, some designated for school district employees.
