When a Boulder lake was infested with thousands of goldfish, authorities worried they would destroy the ecosystem. All methods of removing them were unpleasant. Then, flocks of migrating white pelicans descended upon the lake, gorged on the goldfish and the problem was over.
Spring brings the white pelican to Colorado lakes and reservoirs. It stands four to five feet tall, has a 9-foot wingspan and a huge orange bill that sports a prominent bump during breeding season. Then there’s that famous large, stretchy pouch it uses as a net to scoop up fish and amphibians. It’s a myth that pelicans store food in there. In late summer pelicans gather into squadrons for cooperative fishing. And when Colorado waters freeze over, it’s their signal to head for warm coastal areas.
