It’s music that has defined a movement. Chicano music broadly encompasses various musical styles created by Mexican Americans, often reflecting themes of cultural identity, resistance, and the Chicano experience. The 29th annual Chicano Music Festival begins today in downtown Denver and runs through Sunday, July 27. The festival includes inducting three Colorado musicians and a band into the Chicano Music Hall of Fame. Tony Garcia is with Su Teatro Cultural and Performing Arts Center which organizes this event. He spoke with Chandra Thomas Whitfield about honoring Chicano legacy and illuminating voices that are often overlooked, and at times, flat out ignored.
