Air travel will be much speedier in the future if the Colorado-based company Boom Supersonic has its way. The company is developing a commercial supersonic plane -- meaning that it will travel faster than the speed of sound. Last month, the test plane took off for the first time and this week, the FAA gave the company approval to fly the plane at supersonic speed, meaning a plane could fly from New York to London in about three and a half hours.

But there are many challenges to get a commercial supersonic plane off the ground, according to Ned Russell, a freelance aviation and transportation reporter whose pieces run in The Washington Post, Yahoo, and The Points Guy.
