Mackenzie Mallon of Lafayette turned 9 yesterday and instead of presents the Lafayette Elementary student asked her friends for donations. The donations are aimed at helping sick and injured animals at the Greenwood Wildlife Rehabilitation Center outside Lyons. She has done this four birthdays in a row, raising nearly $1,000.
She also raises mealworms to help feed birds at Greenwood. The “worm wrangling” program was started two years ago by licensed wildlife rehabilitator Amanda Manoa to help reduce expenses. Worms can cost Greenwood thousands of dollars every year in overnight shipping expenses.
Mackenzie Mallon and Amanda Manoa spoke with Colorado Matters host Ryan Warner.
