Each summer, Colorado’s mountain towns host a mix of professional musicians and aspiring orchestral players at more than a dozen summer festivals dedicated to classical music. The concerts bring music that’s often associated with big halls to rustic settings along the Rockies.

At the Aspen Music Festival and School, world-class soloists perform alongside promising young musicians in a huge tent. At Bravo! Vail, three major U.S. orchestras -- the New York Philharmonic, Philadelphia Orchestra and Dallas Symphony -- each play two weeks of outdoor concerts. The Central City Opera stages productions on the former mining town’s 137-year-old stage.

Monika Vischer, program director and longtime host with CPR Classical, spoke with Colorado Matters’ Ryan Warner about what makes classical summer festivals in Colorado unique, some season highlights and which concerts will air live on Colorado Public Radio. Click the audio link above to listen.
