The spectrum of the sovereign movement can be broad, but the ideology behind the movement fundamentally questions the power and authority of government. The FBI considers the movement a domestic terrorism threat.

One southern Colorado county has drawn followers of the movement and tensions are mounting between those who hold "sovereign beliefs" and law enforcement. Westword reporter Chris Walker went to Costilla County, along the New Mexico border, for his recent cover story, "Sovereign Movement is Anti-Government, Off the Grid... and Gunning for Justice."

Walker spoke with Colorado Matters host Ryan Warner.
