Two lawmakers are seeking mandatory background checks for people who coach youth sports teams for private organizations. Rep. Jonathan Singer and Sen. Rollie Heath, both Democrats from Boulder County, say screenings can help weed out sexual predators. Their legislation that aimed to do that last session was killed in the Senate -- twice -- despite bipartisan support in the House. Critics said the bill did not go far enough to protect children.

Singer hopes for a different outcome in the next session, which begins Jan. 13. He spoke with Colorado Matters host Ryan Warner.
