Mariachi music will soon fill the The Stage theater in Denver. "American Mariachi" is about a young woman breaking with and honoring the traditions of this musical genre, and she does it all for her mother. After it was work-shopped at the 2016 Colorado New Play Summit, the Denver Center for the Performing Arts presents the play's world premiere January 26 and through February 25.
Los Angeles playwright José Cruz González tells Colorado Matters the idea for the play came to him after he took a mariachi class at California State University Los Angeles, where he's a professor of theatre arts.
