The state's largest school district has had to make some dramatic cuts in the face of a roughly fifty million dollar budget gap. Jefferson County Public Schools expects to educate the same number of kids next year, 85,000 of them, but will do so with 70 fewer teachers, and 66 fewer support and administrative staff. These are tough times for districts in general, with state funding being cut back, and federal stimulus money soon to phase out.
