Douglas County Schools operates in one of the wealthiest counties in the country. And the district is in turmoil. It faces a high-profile lawsuit over vouchers. Its teachers are working without a contract, because the school board is at loggerheads with the union. Board members have even suggested cutting ties with the teachers union. All of this has divided the community, says longtime education writer Nancy Mitchell. She’s the editor of EdNews Colorado and is following events in Douglas County, which includes Castle Rock, Highlands Ranch and Parker. Mitchell told Colorado Matters Host Ryan Warner what it’s like at a school board meeting these days.
