Colorado’s biggest independent bookseller is in bankruptcy reorganization but it’s a different story for smaller stores, according to the director of an industry trade association.
The Tattered Cover chain entered bankruptcy reorganization last week and is closing three stores. But Heather Duncan, executive director of the Mountains and Plains Booksellers Association, said her group’s membership is up 30% since 2020.
Duncan told Colorado Matters host Ryan Warner many of the new stores are owned by people who changed careers during the pandemic and are running small operations with new business models like online-only sales and mobile stores.
