Colorado hopes to become the national industry leader for all things health and wellness.

The aggressive goal was unvieled Wednesday as part of a new large-scale, multi-layered strategic plan and report from the state Office of Economic Development and International Trade.

Health care and wellness is already a $40 billion-a-year industry in Colorado.

Economic development leaders say that has the potential to grow exponentially if key business sectors in the state -- such as consumer health, hospitals and health-focused information technology -- can work together.

Michelle Lueck of the Colorado Health Institute helped write the detailed plan.

At its core, Lueck said, is rallying the state's many health-related businesses to see themselves as working toward a common purpose.

"I think that it needs to be deliberate," Lueck said. "And I think that there needs to be some formal collaboration between the health and wellness side of the equation, otherwise it remains to be fragmented."

The report also nudges Colorado's top health leaders to help position the state as a national hub for essential health services in high demand.
