Join us for a one-hour conversation “At the Piano With Anne-Marie McDermott,” pianist and artistic director of the Bravo! Vail music festival. Click the audio above to hear the program.
McDermott visited CPR Classical to share her incredible playing and chat with Charley Samson about life and music.
She also talked about the powerful creative influence of her mother and the exhilaration of discovering something new in old works like Haydn's Piano Sonata in C Major.
In addition to leading Bravo! Vail, McDermott is a member of the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center. She's also artistic director of the Ocean Reef Chamber Music Festival in Key Largo, Fla., and the Avila Chamber Music Celebration in Curaçao in the south Caribbean.
Everywhere she goes, she takes her bouncy Maltese, Samantha, with her -- even into performances and recordings, like the one at CPR. Samantha behaves perfectly, barking only on cue when it's time to applaud. (Clearly, Sam has thought about when it's appropriate to applaud at a classical performance.)
It's always refreshing to meet a world-class pianist who's so down to earth.
Bonus audio: McDermott talks about her musical training, teacher John Browning and pet advice:
