An alternative trade school from Walsenburg is taking the lead in the construction of a new nursing home for veterans, reports the Gazette. Students and recent graduates will work on the project, and the students will earn a variety of certifications in the process.

In construction, they become OSHA certified and learn about concrete, framing, plumbing, insulation, drywall, bidding, finishing, HVAC, bookkeeping and contract writing.

Zack Caltrider, a senior, said the school "definitely keeps me out of trouble."

The Colorado State Veterans Nursing Home Of Walsenburg is being funded through a variety of grants from educational and veterans' groups, says the paper. The home is scheduled to be completed on Oct. 3.
