Chaos descended on Interstate 70 when a single-engine, jet fighter-style airplane clipped a cable over the Colorado River, lost a piece of its wing and sent the wire smashing down onto the highway.
The Daily Sentinel of Grand Junction reports that no one was hurt in the Thursday afternoon accident. But witnesses say the cable acted like a whip, taking out several car windshields and damaging a semitrailer.
The Federal Aviation Administration says the pilot made an emergency landing of his L39 Learjet at the Grand Junction regional airport around 2 p.m.
For hours, I-70 traffic was limited to one lane in each direction so workers could clear the highway.
The pilot's name has not been released. The FAA says the 1984 aircraft is owned by Monument Foundation Inc.
