Colorado Springs officials have passed a revised version of an ordinance that prohibits sitting and lying on public sidewalks after months of pushback from homeless advocates.
The Gazette reports that the City Council on Tuesday approved the latest version of the ordinance, now known as the Pedestrian Access Act.
The ordinance bars sitting and lying on sidewalks, curbs, alleys or streets in the downtown and Old Colorado City business districts.
Violators face a $500 fine, but will be given a warning before they are ticketed. The initial sit-lie ordinance called for up to six month in jail and a $2,500 fine.
Several people still opposed the reduced fines Tuesday, saying the law unfairly targets homeless people. Only a city attorney spoke in favor of the ordinance.
