Gov. John Hickenlooper says he's endorsing Hillary Clinton as the Democratic nominee in the 2016 presidential race. He made the announcement during a Thursday taping of his monthly interview with Colorado Matters on Colorado Public Radio News.

He's expressed support for Clinton before, but hasn't formally endorsed her. Today's news changes that.

The former senator and secretary of state was in Colorado this past weekend, along with her Democratic rival, Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, campaigning ahead of the state's March 1 caucuses.

They both held events before speaking at the Colorado Democratic Party's annual fundraising dinner that set a record for attendance with 1,500 people.

The Colorado contest intensified with news that the Sanders campaign recently poured more than $650 million in television advertising in the state. Former President Bill Clinton and the couple's daughter, Chelsea, plan campaign events in Colorado in the coming days.
