Denver Public Schools has backed off a proposal to remove one year of physical education and art as a requirement for graduation from high school.

A coalition of community, education and health advocates rallied to defend P.E. The Denver Board of Education will vote on the district’s new recommendation at its meeting Thursday.

In a statement, DPS said one-third of high school graduates have to take remedial courses in English or math when they enter college – so the district is revisiting graduation guidelines.
