After a months-long criminal investigation into a fired Jefferson County schools administrator, the county sheriff’s office found that while David Weiss purchased child pornography, he made no direct criminal contact with any juveniles either in person or online.

The investigation into Weiss began in late 2024 after a cyber tip from a financial brokerage firm alerted the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office that Weiss used bitcoin to purchase child porngraphy. A search warrant was issued for his home.

Investigators confiscated all known electronic devices associated with Weiss including computers, iPads, and cell phones. The Rocky Mountain Regional Computer Forensic Lab conducted the forensic searches of those devices. The sheriff’s office noted that the process was lengthy and took several months to complete, according to a statement released Wednesday.

“While there was evidence that Weiss purchased child pornography, there was no evidence showing any direct physical or online contact with juveniles,” the statement read.

Weiss’ employment with JeffCo Public Schools was terminated Dec. 19 last year. At the time, the school didn’t share any details due to an open investigation by the JeffCo Sheriff’s Office. School district officials were also served with a search warrant and cooperated with the investigation.

A month later, deputies from the Washington County Sheriff’s Office in Maryland notified the JeffCo Sheriff’s Office that Weiss died by suicide while visiting family as the investigation was underway.

According to the district, Weiss had worked 19 years in education and held teacher, assistant principal, and principal positions in various metro districts. He joined JeffCo district administration in 2012 and became chief of schools in 2022.

In a statement posted on its website, the school district reiterated the JeffCo Sheriff’s statement and noted that no JeffCo students were involved. A statement also addressed student safety.

“Student safety, our shared responsibility is a shared mission of staff, students, families and the community to enhance student safety within Jeffco. In partnership with local child safety experts, Jeffco is reviewing and improving safety practices to create a safer and more supportive learning environment for all students.”

The allegations against Weiss were the fifth such case in the district in 2024.
