Michelle first joined Colorado Public Radio in 2007 and was part of the "Colorado Matters" team for five years. She then worked at CU-Boulder as communications director for the College of Media, Communication and Information before returning to CPR in 2016. Michelle began her reporting career at a Denver business weekly, spent five years at the Colorado Springs Gazette and later moved to The Denver Post where she served as a state and local government reporter, an assigning editor, city editor and national/international editor.

Awards:
As city editor at The Denver Post, Michelle helped lead the newspaper to a Pulitzer Prize for its coverage of the mass shootings at Columbine High School.

Colorado Fossils Unlock A Million-Year Mystery

The mood was giddy when scientists took the stage last week at the Denver Museum of Nature and Science to talk about what they’re billing as an unprecedented fossil discovery. Scientists working east of Colorado Springs have discovered plant and mammal fossils they say detail what happened in the million years after an asteroid hit Earth, wiping out the dinosaurs and most other life forms. Paleontologist Tyler Larson made the key discovery when he found mammal fossils inside a type of rock called a concretion.

ACLU Posthumously Honors Colorado Disability Rights Activist Carrie Ann Lucas

One of Colorado’s fiercest disabilities rights activists will be honored Thursday, posthumously. For decades, attorney Carrie Ann Lucas fought for parents and children with disabilities. She died earlier this year. The ACLU is recognizing her life’s work with the Carle Whitehead Memorial Award which is given to someone who has devoted significant time and resources to an important contemporary issue.

CU Researcher Will Drift With Sea Ice To Study Climate Change

Here’s an unusual ride to work: “We’re going to hop on the icebreaker Polarstern in Norway and then we’ll sail out into the Arctic Ocean and eventually into the sea ice and kind of break our way in there a little bit and find a place to park and anchor ourselves to a chunk of ice that will be our home for a year.” That’s CU research scientist Matthew Shupe, who’s leaving Monday to live on the sea ice near the North Pole to study climate change.
