NOCHE DE MARIACHI EXPLORES MARIACHI MUSIC AND MUSIC EDUCATION IN THE STATE OF COLORADO

PUEBLO, Colorado – El Pueblo History Museum will be hosting Noche de Mariachi, a free Mariachi music concert and panel discussion exploring the state of mariachi music education in Colorado. The event will take place Wednesday, May 8th, 204 from 5:00 - 7:00 pm at the El Pueblo History Museum in downtown Pueblo, Colorado.

Mariachi music education is expanding across the United States. Research shows that Mariachi music programs transform schools and build strong music, academic, and leadership skills. There are now over 500 mariachi programs offered at universities and public elementary, middle and high schools throughout the nation. Pueblo is home to one of the oldest Mariachi school programs in the state of Colorado. A panel of experts will explore the state of Mariachi music education in Colorado and its future. The discussion will also consider what schools, universities, school districts, municipalities and state governments do to support the future of mariachi music education in Colorado. The panel of experts include: David Benavidez, Director of Mariachi Diamente of Pueblo, CO; Jorge Melo, Director of Mariachi Aguila at Chavez Huerta Preparatory Academy Pueblo, CO; Isahar Mendez, Director of the Colorado Youth Mariachi Program of Denver, CO; Dr. Lorenzo Trujillo, affiliate professor of mariachi music at Metropolitan State University and Director of the Viva Southwest Mariachi Festival in Denver, CO; and Frank and Marlene Vigila of Mariachi San Luis of San Luis, CO.

Noche de Mariachi will coincide with the annual Creative Industries Summit, an event for Colorado creatives to connect, learn, and be inspired. The summit is a two-day event attracting 300 creative stakeholders from over 60 Colorado cities and towns. The summit offers exhibits, performances, networking opportunities, speakers, classes, and workshops.
