The self-proclaimed "hippie band" formed in Colorado in 1970 and had opportunities to sign with a record label. But the group's members were unwilling to compromise their distinctive sound, so they never signed a contract and eventually broke up in 1976. Still, Magic Music's members remained friends and got together to play on occasion.

The self-proclaimed hippie band Magic Music formed in 1970.

Fast forward to a few years ago. One of the founding members had died and another, Chris Daniels, had overcome leukemia. The band reunited for a show in Denver, and soon, the idea of going into the studio and recording took hold.

The result was the group's eponymous album -- their first -- which Daniels says captures the 70s sound, only played by older, wiser musicians. It includes guest performances by musicians from Little Feat, The Doobie Brothers and other notable bands.

Magic Music's revival is also featured in a documentary scheduled to be released in 2018. Daniels spoke with Colorado Matters host Nathan Heffel.
