The plan to rebuild and widen I-70 through northeast Denver is getting closer to reality. The Colorado Department of Transportation wants to tear down the elevated section, between Brighton and Colorado boulevards, and rebuild it below grade. Eventually, there would be 10 lanes, including two tolled express lanes. CDOT says more lanes are needed to handle traffic congestion through the busy corridor. But critics, such as the Colorado Public Interest Research Group, say the $1.2 billion plan is a waste of tax dollars.

Nathan Heffel spoke with Rebecca White, spokeswoman for the I-70 East Project, and David Sachs, editor of the transportation website Streetsblog Denver.
