Riders in the main pack work their way along a stretch from Boulder to Golden, during the seventh and final stage of the USA Pro Challenge bike race, in Denver, Sunday Aug. 24, 2014. The 78-mile seventh stage finished up with several laps around downtown Denver.

The USA Pro Challenge begins in Steamboat Springs on Monday -- and it's anybody's race. That's because two-time defending champ Tejay van Garderen of Aspen has opted to race the Vuelta in Spain instead. And, for the first time this year, there will be two winners, one male and one female, as the challenge adds a women's race.

Colorado Matters host spoke with Caley Fretz, an associate editor with Velo News in Boulder. Fretz has covered the race since it's inception five years ago.

The race begins Monday, Aug. 17, in Steamboat Springs. Stages will hit Aspen, Breckenridge, Loveland, Fort Collins, Golden and Denver -- to name a few places.
