The first high school diploma was awarded in the Colorado territory in the late 1800's. It can be traced to a group of nuns called the Sisters of Loretto. The group was founded in Kentucky in 1812, and then moved West. The nuns opened St. Mary’s Academy in Denver, and over the years added more schools. In honor of the Sisters’ 200th anniversary, the Denver Public Library is featuring an exhibit on their history and impact. It opens this weekend. Ryan Warner speaks with Loretto Sister Lydia Pena, who is the exhibit's curator.
