Around Colorado, homeowners have reported losing their insurance after recent fires, floods and hail storms. But no one knows how many residents have this problem or whether the number is rising, according to Ryan Maye Handy, a reporter with The Gazette in Colorado Springs. Handy found that the state only knows about non-renewals of insurance policies if homeowners submit complaints. That limits the state's ability to respond or help homeowners, Handy's article concludes, though the state's insurance commissioner says there are advantages to being less "hands-on" with insurance providers.

Handy spoke with Colorado Matters host Ryan Warner.
